a single ring thru the two corner grouping completes rows 3 and 4.
It is a good practice to check your counts as you complete each pair of rows.
on row 4 there are two rings unigue to each side and two that are shared at the corners between two sides. You should be able to count four rings total on each side and the total count on row 4 is 18 (=3X6).
Each pair of rows will add two unique rings to each side.
Row 6 will have 4 unique plus two shared corners for a count of 30 (=5X6)
Row 8 will have 6 unique plus two shared corners for a count of 42 (=7X6)
by now you should be getting close to enough rings to go around your crown (temple area) but it will be too short to reach that area until you add a few mow pair of rows which is why you started by making a 5 wide piece to go around your head and detremine the size you needed.
